چکیده

What is Antimycin? Antimycin is the active ingredient in Fintrol, a commercial piscicide. Antimycin is a mixture of closely related molecules produced by Streptomyces bacteria. Antimycin A1 was first isolated during the 1940’s, and its molecular structure determined a few years later. Antimycin (used to refer to all of the antimycin variants collectively) is an antibiotic that was found to be a potent inhibitor of fungal growth (hence the name), while most bacteria are unaffected. Because of its antifungal properties, antimycin was of interest for potential commercial applications in agriculture. This interest led to a significant number of studies about its mechanism of action, and development of synthetic chemical approaches to prepare the compound. It wasn’t until the early ‘60’s that antimycin was found to be highly toxic to fish, which over the last 40 years has led to antimycin being used in a large number of fisheries conservation projects across the US and in New Mexico. It is also used as a commercial fish toxicant to rid catfish farms of undesirable rough fish.

Metal-based nanoparticles in soil: fate, behavior, and effects on soil invertebrates.

Metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) (e.g., silver, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, iron oxide) are being widely used in the nanotechnology industry. Because of the release of particles from NP-containing products, it is likely that NPs will enter the soil compartment, especially through land application of sewage sludge derived from wastewater treatment. This review presents an overview of the litera...

Clarifying and expanding the focus of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

The Author Guidelines for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C) have been updated to address many issues. Please read the full version of the Guidelines online at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/%28ISSN% 291552-8618/homepage/ForAuthors.html. Most noteworthy is the explicit recognition that assessing (and managing) environmental quality requires understanding the actual o...

Paint solvent to food additive: an environmental route of dehalogenation for 4-chlorobenzotrifluoride.

In an effort to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint solvents, replacements containing non-VOC compounds have been proposed. One such compound is 4-chlorobenzotrifluoride (CBTF), for which environmental fate studies have not been conducted. The objective of the present study was to determine the products of the atmospheric oxidation of CBTF and the aqueous fate of these products. S...

Nanowastes and the environment: using mercury as an example pollutant to assess the environmental fate of chemicals adsorbed onto manufactured nanomaterials.

Emerging nanotechnologies hold great promise for creating new means of detecting pollutants, cleaning polluted waste streams, and recovering materials before they become wastes, thereby protecting environmental quality. Studies focusing on the different advantages of nanoscience and nanotechnology abound in the literature, but less research effort seems to be directed toward studying the fate a...
